"Thanks to everyone for the huge amount of support... what a fun race! I knew it would be tough starting so far down in the field (I started 31st of 32) and I had to really concentrate on passing and steering effectively. A couple of scullers did not want to let me pass and I got into an unfortunate collision under one of the bridges. Both of us were stopped and stuck; it was here where I lost most of my time in the race, as we tried unsuccessfully to disentangle from the clashing of oars and boats. However, this is one of the downsides of head style racing; but this third place gives me a great starting position next year in the same event.

What mattered most to me was the overwhelming support and encouragement from all of you. In the span of little more than a week, I received over 50 pledges via email and I know that several others went directly to the Canadian Cancer Society. When I get the final tally I will be sure to post it here. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was deeply moved by your emails and phone calls, and humbled by how even people I have never met responded in such a meaningful way, as did my friends, teammates and family members.

Together we made a difference."

Jane Rumball, 2006 World Rowing Champion (women's pair), will be dedicating her race at the Head of the Charles Regatta (Boston, October 21-22) to her parents, Charles Thornton and Patricia Bird. Each parent has been diagnosed with a different type of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma over the last year and a half. All money raised from this dedication will go directly to Canadian Cancer Society for Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma research.

"I am racing in the Championship Women's Single at the 42nd Annual Head of the Charles regatta in Boston on October 21st. This is a very prestigious event and includes several international racers. I had the idea a couple of weeks ago to dedicate the race to my parents and their struggle this past year. Then I thought that perhaps this could be a fundraiser for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma research.

I am partnering with the Canadian Cancer Society to raise funds for cancer research. 100% of the funds raised will go directly to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma research so that together we can work towards a cure."

About Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) starts in a type of white blood cell called a lymphocyte. There are two types of lymphocytes: B-cells (B-lymphocytes) and T-cells (T-lymphocytes).

Lymphomas occur in the lymphatic system and can develop wherever lymphocytes travel.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma differs from Hodgkin's lymphoma by:

·       how the cells look under the microscope

·       the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells in Hodgkin's lymphoma

·       how the cells behave

·       how the two types of lymphoma are treated

It is estimated that 6,600 new cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma will be diagnosed in Canada in 2006.
